Watchfield Rally Report
The last rally of the year was held at a new venue, Watchfield near
Burnham on Sea. We left our hosts fairly wet field in bright sunshine (one
groom in shirt sleeves). The route took us on a 9 mile trip on to the
Somerset Levels around the village of Mark. On the way back we stopped so
a gentleman in his nineties could come to his gate to see the turnouts (he
used to drive a baker’s cart), he is still talking about the ponies and
wants to know all about them.
By this time the rain had started again so we did not stop as planned at
the White Horse pub, but went straight back to the field. Four wet ponies
and harness and some very wet grooms (ask Merv) and whips. Then the fun
really started. Mike’s lorry decided it didn’t want to start and all 3
lorries started to slowly sink into the field. We tried using Annie’s
carpets under the wheels, got the carpets wet and muddy but did not get
the lorries moving. So kettles were put on and Bryan went to host Dennis
for a tractor. Dennis had sold his so so he went to his neighbours and
borrowed one with some chains and returned to the field. In the meantime
Mike had swapped his battery and tried to start with jump leads from
Annie’s lorry, good job they were long ones. The tractor arrived and
pulled the lorries out of the field, leaving a lot of mud on the road,
lorries and tractor.

These views
sum up the
conditions of that day.
Many thanks to our hosts for the day, Mr. And Mrs. Dennis Nuttycombe who
invited us back next year in hopefully drier weather.
